Podkast Podrška · a Belgrade-based association, since 2019

When newsrooms are under pressure, the microphone stays free.

We build infrastructure for independent audio journalism in the Balkans. We launched Podcast.rs, conduct the only podcast audience research in Serbia and the region, and teach journalists to tell stories through sound. We work with investigative newsrooms to help their reporting reach people who might never read it.

Who we are

We began by deciding not to compete.

In April 2019, IREX organised MediaJam at Belgrade’s Impact Hub: a hackathon with one task — to design a podcast platform for Serbia. Two teams shared first place. One was led by Vladimir Radinović from the Polish startup RadioKit; the other by Goran Vojteški and the team behind what was then a modest website, Podcast.rs.

As the judges announced the result, Vladimir turned to Goran: “This scene is too small for two platforms. Shall we work together?” We applied for a grant as a single team and registered the Podkast Podrška association in August 2019.

For years, the public knew us only as Podcast.rs. This website shows what stands behind the platform.

Why podcasts, why now

The freedom a newsroom can no longer guarantee.

Serbia is a country of captured media. Much of its national television and daily press is under government influence, while independent journalists work under constant pressure.

In this environment, podcasts offer something that has become rare: editorial freedom. You do not need a frequency, a licence or an owner. You need a microphone, a story and an audience that trusts you.

We have already seen this in neighbouring countries. In Poland and Hungary, when public service broadcasters were brought under political control, many journalists lost their jobs. They continued working through podcasts and online audio channels and, with listener support, built new, sustainable media outlets.

That is why we are building more than a platform. We are creating the conditions for independent journalism to move into audio, find an audience and survive.

What we do

Five things the podcast scene needs — and we are building.

Platform

Podcast.rs brings podcasts from Serbia and the region together in one place. It helps listeners discover new shows and creators reach an audience.

Research

Sluška is the region’s only podcast audience study. Its first edition, in 2023, gathered 350 responses; the second, in 2025, gathered 555. Alongside Sluška, we conducted Monitor in 2023, surveying 52 podcast teams about what they need to survive.

Education

Since 2019, we have held more than 15 workshops for over 150 journalists, students and creators. We learn by doing: everyone arrives with a topic and leaves with a plan, a script or a finished episode.

Newsroom support

We have advised and supported newsrooms and creators including CINS, KRIK, BIRN, Vreme, N1, Nova, Agelast and Biznis priče. Our support has ranged from choosing equipment and hosting to structuring series and post-production.

Community

We bring podcasters together to exchange experience. Since 2026, we have publicly marked International Podcast Day. We are a programme partner of the first NaPod festival, where we run the Podcast Clinic, offering free consultations for creators.

Projects that show what support means.

Our first and largest project

Podcast.rs

The largest regional podcast archive: 594 shows and more than 46,000 episodes from Serbia and the former Yugoslavia, with a web player and apps for iOS and Android. For many creators, it was the first place listeners found them.

The Podcast.rs platform with a selection of podcasts and episodes.

Naša posla

A documentary narrative podcast and a school at the same time. Through workshops and mentoring, young journalists develop their own stories from the field, which we turn into audio documentaries.

Listen
EUcast — podcasts on important topics; the original map artwork.

EUcast

A platform for podcasts about human rights, society and European integration. We explore major issues through human stories, conversations and concise explanations.

Listen

Stories we helped bring to listeners

The best evidence of our work is other people’s stories.

Tragovi (CINS). With our support, the Centre for Investigative Journalism of Serbia moved from text to narrative podcasting. The first season, “Zao čas”, explores the mass shootings at Vladislav Ribnikar Primary School, Malo Orašje and Dubona, and received a special commendation at the Dejan Anastasijević Awards. The second season, “Jama”, about the Soko mine disaster, won joint second place in the 2025 EU Investigative Journalism Awards for the Western Balkans and Türkiye. Our team handled recording and post-production.

Dnevnik jedne mladosti. Journalism student Milica Mihajlović makes this podcast with our editorial and production support. The series on young people and activism during the student protests received a special commendation in the radio and podcast journalism category at the 2026 European Voices Awards in Florence. In 2025, episodes from the series won the Dragan Janjić Media Literacy Award (Beta and NUNS) and first place in the Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s student competition.

Project history

Seven years, six donor-funded projects.

Since our founding in 2019, we have delivered six projects with international donor support. Each left something that still works today: a platform, a studio, research or a new podcast.

Collaboration beyond grants: we work with the weekly Vreme on the podcast “Ova situacija”. We helped CINS launch “Tragovi”. We produced episodes of “BIRN Priča” for BIRN. In 2023, we organised the Belgrade media design sprint for Hostwriter as part of The Circle Hubs initiative.

Where we go next

The next step: a regional institute for podcast journalism.

Over seven years, we have built the parts the scene was missing: a platform, research, a school, a studio and a network of newsrooms. Now we want to bring them together in a single institution: a regional Podcast Lab.

We envision a place that:

  • advocates for better conditions and a legal framework for creating and running podcasts;
  • makes room for marginalised voices and topics overlooked by major media;
  • supports independent newsrooms and creators, from idea to audience;
  • trains a new generation of audio journalists;
  • regularly researches audiences and shares the data with the entire scene.

We are looking for partners who want to build this with us.

Let’s start something together.

Working on a project that needs audio, podcast audience research or journalist training? Looking for a local partner with experience in media development? Write to us. We respond in Serbian and English.

From ten podcasts to a regional scene

Studio 10. We spent our first year working from Impact Hub, in the space that had once been Radio Belgrade’s renowned Studio 10, where radio dramas were recorded. A new generation of audio stories was taking shape where an earlier one had been made.

A scene that barely existed. Serbia then had around ten to twenty podcasts, half of them archives of local community radio programmes. Spotify was not available in Serbia, podcasts were not on YouTube, and 200 to 300 listens per episode counted as a success. We spent the first months digging through the internet: finding programmes in Serbian, writing to their creators and asking them to send us their RSS feeds.

The pandemic. During lockdown, many people started a podcast or listened to one for the first time, while the success of shows such as Agelast demonstrated that the format had an audience. Submissions began arriving on their own, from across the former Yugoslavia. From 15 podcasts at launch, the platform grew to more than 350 by mid-2022. Today, the archive holds 594.

The first video podcast studio. In 2021, the European Endowment for Democracy supported us with a pandemic grant. We used it to buy video equipment and became Serbia’s first studio specialising in video podcast production for clients. Two years later, with IREX’s support, we opened our own studio and conducted the region’s first podcast audience research.

The association and the company. In January 2024, we established commercial production as a separate company, VisionsHQ. The association remained dedicated to its founding purpose: public-interest projects, research, education and support for independent media. VisionsHQ’s client revenue helps keep the team together between projects.

What support looks like in practice

Sluška: what we actually know about audiences. Before Sluška, nobody in the region had systematically asked who listens to podcasts, where they find them and why they stop listening. We present the findings to creators, newsrooms and donors so that decisions about new shows are based on data rather than assumptions.

What we learned:

Audiences want to learn. 77% of listeners listen to podcasts to learn something. Asked what is missing in their language, they name educational topics (2025) and documentary formats (2023).

Audiences are willing to pay. Half of respondents in 2025 support domestic podcasts financially, regularly or occasionally, most often with 3 to 5 euros a month.

Creators are left on their own. For 58% of podcast teams, podcasting is a hobby. As many as 74% say they most need help connecting with advertisers, while 62% need help with promotion (Monitor 2023).

Workshops: from topic to episode. Our workshops are led by journalists and editors who make podcasts themselves. We work through idea development, research, choosing an angle, scriptwriting and editing. Participants develop their own stories, with care for the facts and the people they report on.

Mentoring: keeping experience with the creator. Once a project enters production, we work with creators on story structure, interviews and feedback. The aim is for them to lead their next project more independently.

A platform we built from scratch

Podcast.rs began as a WordPress website with around ten shows. With USAID and IREX support in 2019 and 2020, we developed the platform, followed by iOS and Android apps. Later, we added a player that keeps playing as users browse the site, and personal playlists.

Search and topic categories help listeners find shows based on their interests, even when they do not know whose name to look for. Every show retains its own voice and authorship. Our role is to help audiences find it.

From the field to an audio story

We launched Naša posla in 2025 with support from Media Fund Serbia, a programme implemented by the Balkan Trust for Democracy. The narrative podcasting programme combined scriptwriting, solutions journalism and mentoring as participants developed their own episodes.

The story begins in the field. We record conversations, events and ambient sound, then find the story’s rhythm and shape in the edit. This keeps complex subjects understandable and the people at their heart recognisable.

An example: in “Mi stvarno živimo na foru” (season two, June 2026), Sara Stanojković follows a group of school students and their teacher Nikola. Footage of a polluted river prompts the whole community to act.

Big questions, human stories

We developed EUcast from 2023 to 2025 with support from MATRA, a programme of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nevidljivi ljudi: the experiences of people living with homelessness and social exclusion. In the episode “Pozdrav”, we meet Meho Salihović and learn about life without identity documents.

svEUkratko: short, clear explanations of the European integration process, by Filip Lukić.

Dnevnik jedne mladosti: journalism student Milica Mihajlović’s podcast about being young in Serbia today.

BIRN Priča: we also produced individual episodes of BIRN’s podcast through EUcast.
